The College of Alameda athletic field was abuzz with energy and pride on May 23, 2025, as the college held its commencement ceremony for the Class of 2025. The event was a powerful testament to the graduates' resilience and determination.
Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson commended the graduates on their remarkable journey. "Today is not just a ceremony; it's a triumph, because for many of you, the walk across the stage has been anything but easy," Dr. Gilkerson noted, emphasizing that their degrees are "a testimony to your will, to your resilience, to the people who held you up and the storms you walked through alone."
College of Alameda President Melanie Dixon celebrated the "fierce and fearless Cougars" of the Class of 2025, highlighting their diverse backgrounds and impressive academic achievements. " President Dixon recognized the 40 graduates from the Alameda Science and Technology Institute who also earned a COA certificate or degree in addition to graduating high school. "You didn't just double up on coursework, but you've doubled down on success." She encouraged the graduates to embody the spirit of their mascot: "Cougars are resilient, adaptable, and powerful, just like you... You've overcome more than coursework; you've changed your family's trajectory, inspired a community, and challenged the stereotypes."
The keynote address was delivered by the Honorable Barbara Lee, Oakland's new mayor and former congresswoman. A long-time advocate for justice and opportunity, Mayor Lee shared her own experience of balancing education with family responsibilities. "I attended Mills College and the University of California at Berkeley while raising two little boys as a single mother on public assistance, and I know how hard it can be." She inspired the graduates, stating, "Your detour doesn't disqualify you, your struggle isn't your weakness, it's your strength." Mayor Lee also stressed the critical need for their leadership: "Society is really depending on you as a leader to step up regardless of your college major, or profession, or whatever you choose to do."
Student voices resonated throughout the ceremony. Erson Payopay, President of the Associated Students of College of Alameda, reflected on his own growth and the unique path of community college students. "We didn't just meet expectations, we broke them. We didn't just follow the norms, we challenged them. We changed the narrative of what it means to be a community college student."
Delena Jackson, College of Alameda Valedictorian, candidly shared her journey, "If you had told me 28 years ago after barely graduating high school that I would graduate and be giving a valedictorian speech, I would have laughed in your face." She celebrated the collective perseverance of her class: "We didn't just survive, we succeeded. We did the thing."
The event was a powerful affirmation of the College of Alameda's commitment to transforming lives and empowering its students to shape a more just and equitable future.
Congratulations to the College of Alameda Class of 2025!
