The Peralta Community College District (PCCD) and the entire East Bay community are mourning the loss of a true civic giant, the Honorable William “Bill” Patterson, who passed away following a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades. A close friend and mentor to many, Bill’s life was a testament to public service and an unwavering fight for equity and opportunity.
Most critically for our students, back in 1971, Bill was a founding director of the Peralta Colleges Foundation (PCF) and worked closely with the Foundation for many years. Through his visionary leadership, the PCF was established to provide essential financial aid, critical support, and vital pathways to success for countless students across Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College. His work ensured that access to quality higher education remained possible for the most deserving students in our community.
His connection with Peralta was not just from the Foundation as he also volunteered on Peralta’s Citizen Oversight Committee (a precursor to our current Parcel Tax Oversight Committee and our Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee).
Beyond his dedication to education, Bill’s influence profoundly shaped the region’s infrastructure and civic life. He served with distinction as a three-term President of the Oakland NAACP chapter, tirelessly advocating for justice and civil rights. His commitment extended to public works, where he served for 27 years on the Board of Directors for the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), playing a crucial role in shaping the systems that sustain our community.
Bill Patterson was also known for mentoring future leaders and Hall of Famers through his work overseeing Oakland’s recreation centers. His legacy of excellence, mentorship, and boundless dedication lives on in the spirit and success of the East Bay.
PCCD Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson shared this sentiment: "Bill Patterson prepared generations of young people for meaningful careers. In his memory, let us redouble our commitment to the work he cared about most: ensuring every student has the chance to thrive. We extend our deepest condolences to the Patterson family and all who were touched by his remarkable life."
