Meet David Zheng, a Laney College EOPS alum! The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is a state-funded program designed to provide support services to low-income and academically-disadvantaged students to become successful in college. EOPS is available to assist students with support services like early registration, academic counseling, career guidance, tutoring, book grants, transfer assistance, and tons more. The EOPS program welcomes all eligible students at all 4 of our campuses: Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College.

Below is a written transcript of the video:
"I applied to EOPS because I needed some guidance to stay on track with my schoolwork. As a first-generation college student, I'm really looking for resources that can help me out with my education. The book voucher was super helpful to cover textbook costs, and having a counselor to help me to plan my education and my classes made a big difference.
EOPS really helped me shape both my academic and professional journey. The counselor and coordinator taught me to stay humble, take things slowly one step at a time, but also I have to dream big on my goal. The support gave me the confidence to set my big goal, like transferring from Laney to UCLA and eventually going to dental school. EOPS helped me build the discipline and resilience I need to succeed in school, and working in the office gave me valuable skills in communications, organization, and teamwork, which have definitely helped me throughout my career."
Editor’s Note: 2025 marks the 55th anniversary of EOPS. Students and alumni from each of the Peralta Colleges shared stories with the Board of Trustees at their April 8, 2025 meeting, and we will be sharing student and alumni stories about their EOPS experiences throughout the rest of the Spring 2025 semester.
