During the April 14 Board of Trustees meeting, Davina Malbrough, current President of the Associated Students of Merritt College (ASMC), announced that she has been elected to serve as the next president of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC). Congratulations Davina!

The election took place during the SSCCC General Assembly in San Francisco on March 26. This annual statewide convening brings together student leaders from across California’s 116 community colleges to engage in advocacy, develop leadership skills, and vote on resolutions that guide initiatives for the entire system. As SSCCC President in 2026-27, Davina will represent more than two million students across the California Community Colleges system!

"I am super excited to have pursued my journey within Peralta and be able to go serve 2.2 million students," Malbrough told the Board during her report. "That’s like super awesome. Just knowing that I’ve completed this journey in the last two years... I’m just grateful that I’ve had support and grace within this journey." Peralta Community College District Chancellor Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson expressed pride in Malbrough’s achievement, noting her ongoing dedication to the student body. "We're really thrilled, Davina, for this opportunity for you," Gilkerson said during her report to the Board. "You have consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and student advocacy."

Ms. Malbrough began her service as a Merritt College senator nearly two years ago, later becoming ASMC President and serving as SSCCC Region III Affairs Director.

Malbrough is currently a business major at Merritt College and is expanding her academic focus to include political science as she prepares for the next chapter of her educational journey.

The Peralta Community College District congratulates Davina on this significant leadership milestone and her upcoming role in representing student voices at the state level. This is yet another example of Thought Leadership coming from the Peralta Colleges that will impact state-wide student senate policies and recommendations during the upcoming year.
