Peralta Colleges in the News

The Peralta Community College District has been getting substantial news coverage over the past few months. Each of the colleges is getting excellent news exposure from a wide range of publications.

You probably already know about the big sports stories, like NBA legend Gary Payton becoming the College of Alameda men’s basketball team Head Coach or the endless stream of articles lamenting the Oakland A’s departure that mention Laney College.

But did you know Laney made the San Francisco Chronicle front page because of our association with a vibrant East Bay running club? That article goes on to quote Merritt College faculty member Jason Seals, a member of the club!

Speaking of Merritt and the Chronicle, former faculty member Brad Balukjian published an OpEd about why he named a plant bug he discovered in Tahiti after Kamala Harris. The Merritt College Natural History and Sustainability program features prominently in the article. The Merritt College Administration of Justice program was just mentioned in The Oaklandside.

College of Alameda President Melanie Dixon was featured prominently in a recent edition of the Oakland Post and also got a shoutout from the Alameda Post.

Berkeley City College is also getting mentioned a lot, with faculty members Tomas Moniz and Michael Orkin featured in separate podcasts on the Ivoox network, and the SF Public Library exhibiting “Yours, Tenderly,” a production filmed and edited by BCC Media Arts faculty member Joanna Ruckman.

We’re also mentioned regularly in the important community events we host at the colleges, including the recent Berkeley Mayor candidate forum at Berkeley City College.

All these mentions help show how important the colleges in this district are to our community!

This information was presented by  Dr. Tammeil Gilkerson to the Board of Trustees during her Chancellor's Report at the October 8, 2024, board meeting.
