In an effort to highlight female student-athletes and their accomplishments beyond sports, John Beam started Women’s Empowerment Day. Held annually, on March 19th, this event highlights Laney alumni and former female athletes who share their journeys transitioning from student-athletes to career professionals.

Women’s Empowerment Day celebrates the dedication, resilience, and passion required to succeed in both athletics and professional life. It provides an opportunity for current students to connect with inspiring role models and learn how the skills developed through sports can translate into meaningful careers and community leadership.

Now in its fifth year and we are proud to highlight three outstanding former Laney alumnae:

  • Erica Wilson, Track & Field (2012–2014)
  • Vesta Bell, Track & Field (2011–2013)
  • Maddison “Maddie” Mills, Basketball (2013–2016)
