Earthquake Preparedness: Great Shakeout is October 17th

Written by Johnathan Freeman | Oct 11, 2024 5:17:16 PM

Here in the East Bay, we live in an earthquake zone, so it’s important that we all know what to do to keep as safe as possible during a quake.  The Great California Shakeout on October 17, 2024, at 10:17am, is an opportunity to test our emergency preparedness in case of an earthquake.  On that day and time, the Peralta Community College District will test our emergency communication system, Rave, by sending you all a text and email message advising you of the Great Shakeout emergency earthquake test.

At 10:17am on Thursday, October 17th, please follow the appropriate earthquake safety recommendations. In most situations, if you feel shaking or get an earthquake alert, immediately:

DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and reduces your chances of being hit by falling or flying objects.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.

  • If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath for shelter.
  • If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall.
  • Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs.

HOLD ON until the shaking stops.

  • Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts
  • No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.

Your home college campus may be sharing additional information with you, like where to gather following a real earthquake.

To receive emergency communications, please make sure your contact details are up to date.

  • Students should log in to Campus Solutions > Profile > Contact Details to add or edit telephone and email contact details.
  • Employees should log in to HCM > Employee Self Service > Personal Details > Contact Details to add or edit telephone and email contact details.
