Black History Month at Merritt College

Given Merritt’s history and cultural significance, and the fact that half-way into February, here are some thoughts about Black History Month. Carter G. Woodson—the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard, and the founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History—was the driving force behind the creation of Black History Month.

Originally conceived as Negro History Week in 1926, February has been recognized as Black History Month throughout this nation since the late 1960s. Woodson designated February as the month of celebration to commemorate the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two men many African Americans regarded as luminary figures.

To celebrate this year's Black History month, here's a schedule of the events still to come in an incredible series of events organized by the Associated Students of Merritt College – from workshops to presentations, and even interactive share sessions, we have a little bit of something for everyone!
