Dear Peralta Community,
I am devastated to share that earlier today, a shooting took place at the Laney College Fieldhouse, critically injuring Laney College Athletic Director John Beam. Coach Beam is currently hospitalized at Highland Hospital, surrounded by his family and loved ones. I know our entire community is shocked and deeply concerned for his well-being and stunned that such violence has touched a beloved, respected, and longstanding member of our community.
I understand that this news is shocking and upsetting to many. Moreover, numerous news reports and rumors are circulating. I hope you’ll join me in sending positive thoughts to John and his family, and in supporting colleagues and students who may be impacted.
At this time, we don’t have clear information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting; however, I’m grateful to Community Safety and the Oakland Police Department, who responded quickly and are actively working collaboratively on the investigation. We are in close communication with authorities and will share additional information as it becomes available.
I recognize that this is being felt deeply by many. These acts of violence are incredibly painful and are individually experienced in many different ways. The notification may also bring up feelings from other incidents that I know, sadly, many of you have experienced. To support you, we have coordinated drop-in employee and student counseling services at each of our locations across the District. Please look out for communication from your college and the District Service Center providing direct information on the location and schedule for support.
In addition to in-person services, you can access support through the Employee Assistance Program online or via phone at 1-800-999-7222. You can speak with an EAP professional by phone, meet face-to-face with a professional, or schedule online visits with LiveHealth Online.
I recognize there is a lot to talk about in the coming days, weeks, and months about safety and what’s happening in the broader community. I promise there will be opportunities. However, now more than ever, let us stay focused on being the beacon of hope and opportunity that Coach champions every day.
